We Got Crafty – How To Make Tea Cups That You Can Eat

Apparently the older your kids get, the more you are supposed to “do” at a party.

It’s no longer about just getting together to have fun, you actually have to entertain them.  Just having a jumping castle and yummy food is not enough.  Although now that I think about it, I had to bribe them with the fact that they could actually eat the craft in order to get them off the jumping castle.  Anyway.

This is the first time that I decided to do a craft at the party so I wanted to make it quick and easy but with a “baking” sort of theme.  I know tea cups aren’t really baking themed but if you think about it, you generally eat anything that you have baked with a lovely cup of tea – so it works OK!

The only thing that I had to make was the icing and the rest was just assembling.

To make the cutest edible tea cups that happen to look more like coffee mugs, you need:

• Packet of round sweets cut in half.  We searched every shop available and eventually found one lone packet in the sweets aisle at Clicks
• Marie biscuits
• Marshmallows
• Chocolate disks.  I found these at CAB foods in Access Park.  Bummed that they didn’t exactly fit the size of the marshmallow, but the kids didn’t even notice, so it’s cool.
• Icing in bright colours
• Sprinkles

I think the how to is pretty obvious, basically you use the icing as colourful glue that makes everything stick together.  But if your kids are anything like ours, they wouldn’t even last 5 minutes before being devoured.

A few tips that would have made this process a whole lot easier:

• Give everyone their own knife and bit of icing in a bowl – there was way too much germ swapping going on with all the licking and then sticking back into the icing.  Ewww.
• Set everything out per child on their own plate before  you call them in to do the craft.
• Realise that they don’t care nearly as much as you do about what the end product looks like and that’s OK.
